Memory foam toppers stink – partly a side effect of the manufacturing process and the subsequent packing process. The common anti-flame treatment by inundating the foam topper with a flame retardant chemical doesn’t help any. Obviously, it is essential to air your memory foam mattress pad before you use it.
But what is the best way to do this? The usual recommendation is to leave it somewhere cool but with good ventilation for at least two weeks – best is probably outdoors under the shade. You should also turn it everyday (while you are airing your topper).
But what if you do not live in a house or do not have access to a carport or outdoor shelter? Well … I live in an apartment, so I understand part of the problem. What I did was to air my mattress topper in a rarely used room. I opened the windows and door, then pointed a blower fan (or air circulation fan) out the biggest window. This made sure fresh air flowed into that room and the tainted air flowed outside.
Obviously, this may not work so well during a cold winter. The electricity bill for a fan (needed to improve ventilation) is not too expensive, but the additional heating bill to keep the house warm could be an issue. Sad to say, if this is a problem for you, you may just have to wait until it gets warmer to air out your memory foam pad.
