Is A Memory Foam Topper Good For Pregnancy?

Many pregnant women complain of back pain, especially in the later stages of their pregnancy. They will probably benefit from a memory foam mattress topper or even a latex topper. These are relatively cheap ways to increase the thickness and softness of their mattresses without having to buy a new bed.

When should a pregnant woman buy her foam topper? The answer is simple – whenever her back starts aching again. That shows her current mattress and topper combo is no longer providing her back with enough support. Why not buy an extra-thick foam pad immediately? Well, that’s certainly an option. However, it is too easy to get a memory foam pad that is too firm and too soft for her needs at the time.

That is why it is a good idea to start off easy. Start with a thin 2″ memory foam mattress pad that is slightly softer than the existing mattress. Add another thin memory foam topper pad that is slightly softer when and as needed. Add a third even softer topper when the time is right. A nice side benefit is that it is usually cheaper to buy two 2-inch memory foam pads than one thick 4-inch memory foam topper (at this point of time). It is definitely cheaper to buy three 2-inch foam pads than it is to buy one 6-inch mattress.

Using memory foam bed toppers really show their advantage when the pregnant woman sleeps with her significant other on the same bed. She can add additional toppers (sized to cover her half of the bed) whenever she needs the extra comfort without affecting her partner too much.

On the other hand, buying a new memory foam mattress for pregnancy may not be the best idea. New memory foam mattresses tend to be expensive. Furthermore, as the woman’s pregnancy advances, her needs will change – she may need something firmer to support her back, or she may wish for a softer mattress for greater comfort. The high price tag of a memory foam mattress makes it a long-term commitment, and is not something that can be changed every few months.
